Community Roots: Music Program
Free Youth Development Through Music
The Community Roots Music Program is ANAM Georgia’s core youth development program for children and youth ages 3–17. Students participate in music and arts learning while developing academic, social-emotional, leadership, interpersonal, and career-readiness skills. Through age-appropriate music experiences, mentorship, performances, leadership opportunities, and exposure to music and creative-industry pathways, students begin building the skills, confidence, and awareness needed for future educational and career opportunities.

Early Childhood Music and Literacy
Our Early Childhood Music and Literacy Program integrates music, movement, and literacy activities for children ages 3–6 in partnership with local libraries and area schools.
Activities support:
- Early literacy and vocabulary development
- Early math concepts, including counting and patterns
- Listening and attention
- Memory and sequencing
- Creativity and musical expression
- Social-emotional development
- Communication and self-regulation
Programs are designed to be engaging, developmentally appropriate, and accessible, helping young children build foundational learning skills while developing confidence, curiosity, and positive connections with others.
Music Discovery Day
Discover Music. Discover Possibility.
Music Discovery Day is an annual community event. It introduces children and families to music, instruments, creative learning, and the ANAM Georgia approach.
Through hands-on activities and community engagement, children can explore music in a welcoming environment while families learn more about available opportunities.
Future Programs
ANAM Georgia is developing additional programs that will expand access to music education, youth development, and culturally responsive learning opportunities for children and youth throughout DeKalb County and the greater Atlanta community.
Community Roots: School Cohort
A School-Based Youth Development Program Through Music & the Arts
The Community Roots School Cohort is a school-based extension of ANAM Georgia’s Community Roots Music Program, bringing accessible, culturally responsive music and youth-development programming directly into area schools.
The program will initially use child-sized keyboards as the primary instrument, giving students a hands-on introduction to music while developing skills that support success in school and everyday life. As the program grows, ANAM Georgia plans to expand opportunities to additional instruments, such as violin and other instruments, based on student interest, funding, and instructional capacity.
Through a structured one-hour weekly session, students will participate in music-centered activities that intentionally integrate music and arts learning, academic reinforcement, social-emotional development, leadership, mentorship, and creative expression.
Planned focus areas
- Music & Arts: Keyboard exploration, rhythm, singing, movement, musical games, creativity, and foundational musicianship.
- Academic & Literacy Reinforcement: Listening, vocabulary, sequencing, patterns, counting, reading-related activities, and homework/learning connections.
- Social-Emotional Learning: Confidence, self-regulation, focus, persistence, communication, and teamwork.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Responsibility, peer collaboration, goal-setting, student voice, and age-appropriate leadership opportunities.
- Career & Creative-Industry Awareness: Exposure to musicians, artists, music educators, and creative careers as students progress.
- Performance & Community Engagement: Student sharing, showcases, school performances, and opportunities to celebrate learning.
ANAM Georgia’s Louis Heriveaux Jazz Education Program
ANAM Georgia is developing the Louis Heriveaux Jazz Education Program as a youth-centered music and cultural education initiative that will use jazz as a pathway for musicianship, leadership, cultural learning, confidence, and community connection.
The program will recruit and develop young musicians to participate in a youth jazz ensemble, providing structured instruction, mentorship, rehearsals, and performance opportunities. Participants will then share their learning through interactive jazz performances and educational experiences in local schools and community settings, creating opportunities for other young people to experience live jazz and learn about its cultural significance.
The program will provide emerging musicians with meaningful opportunities to develop their artistic and leadership abilities while introducing students—particularly those with limited access to live music—to jazz through an engaging, youth-led experience.
